Hot Spring
The Tokachidake mountain range is located on the south side of the Daisetsu Mountains that rise almost in the center of Hokkaido.Located at the foot of the mountain overlooking the Tokachidake mountain range, "Biei Shirokane Onsen" is a hot spring resort where you can enjoy the rich natural scenery of the mountains and the surrounding area.
In 1950, Mr. Kakuichi Kouei, then mayor of Biei Town, succeeded in drilling after many hardships, and colorless hot water of 48°C (118.4℉) gushed out from 399m (436yd) under the ground. The hot spring was named “Shirogane Onsen” (white gold hot spring) after Mr. Kakuichi Kouei, then mayor of Biei Town, who said, “This hot spring is so precious that it should be called platinum that came from the bottom of the earth.
The road from downtown Biei to Biei Shirogane Onsen is called Shirakaba Kaido (white birch road) because it is lined with 4 km (4,374yd)-long birch forests that grew wild after the mudflow from the eruption of Mount Tokachi in 1926.
